 Save the Date! Honoring Melanne Verveer at our 2013 fundraising event. On June 11, 2013, we will honor the first United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer at our annual fundraiser. A long-time champion for women's empowerment, Verveer is an innovative thought leader working tirelessly for gender equality and women and girls' rights globally. Stay tuned for more event details as the date approaches. Get on the Map! for Women and Girls 2013. As part of our Datamapping Initiative, we continue to partner with Women in the World Foundation to map organizations working on women's issues globally. This year, we are expanding to include maps on the state of women in the world and comparative maps on gender-based violence trends, including state responses to combat the pandemic. We also created Get on the Map! for Women and Girls Brazil in partnership with Women in the World Foundation and Coca Cola for the Women in the World Summit Brazil in November 2012.
2013 Mongolia Surgical Teaching Mission. In Mongolia, seeing is survival. For these nomadic peoples living in remote areas, surgery is an inaccessible, unaffordable luxury. During our fifth Mongolia surgical teaching mission, we will bring life-saving, sight-restoring operations to Mongolians while educating local surgeons. Contribute now by purchasing essential equipment and supplies for our team. Acid Violence Center of Excellence in Bangladesh. As an expert surgeon who has operated on dozens of acid attack survivors, Director of International Programming and Global Health Dr. Ebby Elahi will serve on Acid Survivors Foundation Bangladesh's Center of Excellence Advisory Committee to study and replicate best practices in acid violence prevention and treatment. For more on our long-term commitment to combating acid violence, please see our Acid Violence Healthcare Initiative page. 2013 Lawyers Without Borders Kenya Trial Advocacy Training. We are continuing our long-term commitment to Women Judges in the Pipeline by supporting the sixth annual LWOB Trial Advocacy Training in Nairobi, Kenya. 2013 Tumu Women's Health Project. In November, as a continuation of our Tumu Healthcare Initiative, our Austrian team from the University of Vienna will return to Tumu, Ghana to provide services and training toward improving maternal health and women's healthcare service delivery in the region. Non-Invasive Ventilation Program reducing child mortality in Northern Ghana. Since mapping available global health data in November 2011, Co-Founder and Vice President Dr. Joan LaRovere and her team implemented a pilot project—a noninvasive ventilation program for children under five that has reduced cause-specific child mortality rates due to respiratory failure from 14 to 4 percent—in Tumu Hospital. Non-invasive ventilation has also been introduced to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra as a means to introduce intensive care services for children in the capital and to link these two centers. The program provides equipment, training and direct care while creating a hub and spoke support system between Accra and Tumu.

   Digital Storytelling Initiative Using classroom curricula, online games, and digital storytelling, this initiative provides students with the opportunity to tell their stories of community service, citizenship, and the positive impact they are making in their communities. "I founded iCivics to inspire the next generation to become active and effective civic participants," said Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. "The Virtue Foundation/iCivics Digital Storytelling Initiative will provide access to technology, teach citizenship, and help students across the country engage in their communities." "This initiative builds upon Virtue's past project successes toward providing a learning environment in which students are acquiring essential skills, engaging in community service, and feeling empowered to make a difference," said Dr. Salim, Executive Director of the Virtue Foundation.  The Virtue Foundation launches VFKids.org, a new website dedicated to children's education and to showcasing young people's talent and creativity in utilizing 21st Century digital education tools.

Dr. Joan LaRovere presents at Maternal Health Conference in Vienna. On December 6, 2012, Vice President and Co-Founder Dr. Joan LaRovere spoke at the Menopause, Andropause and Anti-Aging Congress in Vienna, Austria. Her talk, "Matching Resource with Need: Data Mapping to Understand Maternal Mortality and Women's Health," centered on our collaborative work with the University of Vienna Medical Center in Tumu, Ghana.
Dr. LaRovere accompanies Secretary Clinton and Ambassador Verveer as official delegate on U.S. State Department Visit to China. In May 2012, Vice President and Co-Founder Dr. Joan LaRovere visited China as part of the official delegation for the third People-to-People Exchange. Led by Ambassador Melanne Verveer, the team met with Chinese officials, organizations, academic institutions and philanthropists to examine and address the situation of women in China.
