MONGOLIA HEALTHCARE INITIATIVE
THE VIRTUE FOUNDATION TOGETHER WITH SURGICAL EYE EXPEDITIONS CO-SPONSORED A TEACHING SURGICAL MISSION TO MONGOLIA In June 2009, Virtue Foundation together with Surgical Eye Expeditions co-sponsored a teaching surgical mission to Mongolia. Over 100 ocular and Oculoplastic procedures were performed at the First Hospital of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. With the help of volunteers like Laura Vickers of Mount Sinai school of Medicine, close to $ 50,000 of medical and surgical equipment were purchased or procured by donation. The VF surgical team led by Dr Ebby Elahi was struck by the severe need for advanced surgical care and the lack of basic equipment and infrastructure. The team was warmly received by their hosts, whose generosity left a lasting impression. All surgeries were performed in conjunction with local staff. In addition to surgical procedures, several city-wide didactic sessions were organized by the host department. A larger multidisciplinary team plans on returning to Mongolia next year, to continue teaching and training the local physicians and healthcare providers, enabling them to provide a much better quality of care for their community on a sustainable basis. |
