Virtue Foundation continues its support of the young Cambodian mother, Yem, and her daughter, Sophan, both victims of a violent acid attack in 2004, as well as Sophan's two older sisters.

In June of 2008, Virtue Foundation sponsored another trip for Yem and Sophan to return to the United States for follow-up surgeries and related medical treatment donated by Mount Sinai Medical Center and numerous volunteer surgeons and doctors including Dr. Ebby Elahi, Dr. Lester Silver, Dr. Penny Asbell, Dr. Michael Shohet, Dr. Steven Rosenberg, Dr. Ellen Marmur and Dr. Dan Cammerman.   Since Yem and Sophan returned to Cambodia in August of 2008, the family's situation has vastly improved.  All three daughters currently live at Hagar Cambodia's shelter in Phnom Penh and in partnership with Hagar Cambodia, Virtue Foundation provides all three children with food, shelter, clothing, medical care and access to formal education.  The children have been attending school regularly since 2009 and have been progressing rapidly.  Sophan is now already five years old and attending kindergarten.  "I am very happy that I can live with my sisters at the shelter. I have friends who love me and I enjoy studying at the same school with my sisters. I enjoy studying English more than Khmer," says little Sophan.

Virtue Foundation has also partnered with Hagar Cambodia to facilitate continued therapy for Yem; she regularly attends group activities at the Rose Charities Clinic in Phnom Penh. Yem visits her daughters monthly and is very pleased that all three daughters are receiving a formal education.  Since Yem has returned to her village in the Takeo province, she has been reunited with her husband and the community has responded very positively towards them.  Yem and her husband have a better understanding of one another and improved parenting skills.   Since undergoing her surgeries and receiving counseling, Yem’s confidence has greatly increased.  Yem says, "My attitude has changed… my husband and my children now respect me.  My family now lives in happiness."
