THE POWER OF TRUST: REBUILDING THE ROOTS OF FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS By Byllye Y. Avery Founder of the National Black Women's Health Project (NBWHP), a non-profit organization committed to defining, promoting, and maintaining the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of African-American women, Byllye Y. Avery has been a women's health care activist for over 25 years. Drawing upon her vast experience in the field, Ms. Avery will address the process used by African American women through the NBWHP to share their life stories and the impact of "broken trust" in their lives. She will also examine how social determinants of health such as violence have a devastating effect on self-esteem and the ability to access one’s personal power. In addition to the NBWHP, Ms. Avery has also founded the Avery Institute for Social Change and co-founded the Gainesville Women's Health Center and Birthplace. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship for Social Contribution, the Essence Award for Community Service, the Academy of Science Institute of Medicine's Gustav O. Lienhard Award for the Advancement of Health Care, the Grassroots Realist Award by the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, the Dorothy I. Height Lifetime Achievement Award, and has received a Citation from the President of the American Public Health Association. In 1998, Business and Professional Women presented her with the New Horizons Award and she received a Leadership Award from the University of Florida School of Medicine. In 2002, she was honored by the Fenway Health Center in Boston. She has served on the Charter Advisory Committee for the Office of Research on Women's Health of the National Institutes of Health and has been a visiting fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health.
